Staff Departments

The Civil Nuclear Constabulary currently employs over 700 Police Officers and Police Staff at a number of locations throughout Great Britain.

It is the statutory duty of the CNC and, therefore, the primary function of CNC staff, to protect nuclear material both on Civil Nuclear Licensed sites and whilst in transit, in Great Britain and elsewhere. This is carried out on behalf of the Government, by providing an Armed Police Service to Nuclear Operators such as UKAEA, British Nuclear Group, Urenco and British Energy.

The CNC have a dedicated team of Police Staff who are mainly based at Culham in Oxfordshire and at the Constabulary Training Centre in Cumbria. In addition, all Operational Units have administration support and some also employ police staff in roles such as kennel assistants. The areas in which Police Staff are employed include:

  • Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO secretariat)
    Police staff are employed to provide administrative and secretarial support to the Chief Officers,
  • Human Resources (HR)
    This department consists of a number of HR professionals with administrative support, working together to provide a dedicated HR function for the Constabulary.
  • Corporate Development
    A team is employed to coordinate all corporate strategic activities within a diverse portfolio, including Quality Management, Communications, Business Planning, Performance and Inspection activity.
  • Operations (Cumbria)
    Police staff are employed to provide administrative and secretarial support to the Operations department which is responsible for Escort and Operations planning.
  • Operations Support (based in Cumbria and Culham)
    This department provides support to the operational elements of the Constabulary, specifically in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, exercises, health and safety, contingency planning, Airwave, fleet management, intelligence, operational dogs, clothing stores and crime investigation.
  • Finance
    The finance team delivers an effective 'best value' service to the Constabulary and supports it in meeting overall strategic objectives.
  • Training (Cumbria)
    Police staff are employed to ensure the provision of a comprehensive and efficient administrative service to all the departments within the training centre and to provide training in areas such as physical fitness.
  • Administration
    The Central Administration team carries out the centralised administrative tasks required with Headquarters as well as functions such as purchasing and travel and subsistence. The team is headed up by the Office Manager who is responsible for facilities management, CNC estates strategy and supplier performance management.
  • Legal
    The legal department ensures that the Constabulary has comprehensive and responsible legal support across its range of functions.
  • IT & Communications
    The team provides computer and communications technology support to the Constabulary, to enable the best use of technology resources
